The Operation
The Tinian Island wasn't always a US airbase it was taken from the Japanese in the battle of Tinian July of 1944. When the bombs were loaded into the Tinian island base no-one but the Commanding Officer knew about the bombs. Later that night Paul W. Tibbets and Thomas Ferebee plus a few more all headed towards a tent in the base where they would be told they had a mission. They were told at the tent that it was a TOP SECRET mission of stupendous importance. They were told a bomb of extreme explosive measure was going to be loaded onto their plane and they were going to drop it on the city of Hiroshima. When the bomb was loaded on the plane later that night Charles Sweeney decided that it would not be a good idea to have the bomb armed while they took off. because many b29's have crashed on the runway and the explosive measure could destroy the whole island. So Charles Sweeney decided he would disarm the bomb and re-arm the bomb after they were in the air. So he rehearsed all night and morning. In the morning of August 6th ,1945, the b29 bomber Enola Gay lifted off the runway and flew its 6 hour flight all the way to Hiroshima,Japan.
